Gold cladding: three terms, three different processes
Buyers use gold filled, gold plating and electroformed gold cladding almost interchangeably — but they are not the same. The difference is how thick the gold layer is and how it is bonded, which decides wear resistance, gold consumption and the shapes you can produce.
Gold Filled
Mechanically bonded gold sheet, typically 5% gold by weight. Stable thickness, but limited to sheet-forming shapes.
Gold Plating
Electroplated gold at micron-level thickness. Low cost, but limited wear resistance on high-contact areas.
Electroformed Gold Cladding
100 µm or more of 14K–22K gold deposited by electroforming onto tin-bismuth or silver blanks — seamless, hollow, suitable for large 3D pieces, and entirely cyanide-free.
